Thank you for reading my very first post on my first blog. This first post is about a book I started to read late this summer. It’s called The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore. This wouldn’t have been a book that I would choose to read on my own so it was very much a struggle for me to get through it.
This story tells us about the lives of two men named Wes. The first Wes, is the author of the book. Wes’s mother’s had been married twice. Her first husband, his sister’s father, was abusive. She later met and married another man and together they raised Wes and sister. His father ended up dying from a lung disease when he was young. He eventually to attend military school, grew up and joined the Army reserves and completed multiple degrees.
The other Wes was raised by his mother. His father was an alcoholic and wasn’t around or really in his life. His brother,Tony, was a drug dealer and always hung out in the streets. At a young age, Wes had his first arrest for fighting. Later on, he began selling drugs, too. He and his brother eventually committed a robbery and killed a police officer. They went in the run and eventually got caught. They are spending life in prison.
A positive attribute of the book is that it appears that both stories were told equally. You were able to see how both characters grew up and how their lives were completely different. I think a negative attribute was that the story could only be told by one person. The author was telling both sides of the story instead of reading the stories directly from each person.
I think this story is geared towards and would be good for black males. There are more black males that are in jail for committing crimes. This book shows that even thought they had similar lives, the choices they made determined their paths in life. Both could have made different choices in life and it would have changed their lives completely. This book could also be valuable to all teenagers. It can help them make wiser decisions. It shows how important it is to make good decision no matter what station you were given in life. It also shows that even though your life may be difficult or rough, you are capable of doing good things if you do your best and put in the effort.
After reading this book, I could see where it is able to teach you some life lessons. I was glad that there was some funny moments in the book. I’m also glad that this was an easy read can malted to some books..it was much easier to understand and follow along.
